Roads - verges - maintenance

The majority of landscaped verges adjacent to roads are within the public highway. The local authority is required to keep these safe and unobstructed.

Hedges

General

Hedges are cut twice per year during July/ August and September/ October. They are cut back to the previous seasons growth to maintain them at their existing height. Unlike shrub beds, hedges are not treated for weeds. Cuttings are collected up and removed.

Country Side Hedges
Hedges are usually native hedges in rural locations. These are cut using a tractor-mounted flail mower. Hand operated equipment is used to cut hedge plants that are growing around obstructions.

Town Hedges
Town hedges may be cut using a tractor-mounted flail mower or hand operated machinery.

Shrub Beds

Winter
The main pruning is completed during the winter months. Deadwood and plants are removed. Shrubs are reduced to 1m heights. Weeds and litter are cleared from the shrub beds.

Spring.
During the Spring, the focus is on weed control where an application of herbicide is made.

Summer.
The Council undertakes a light prune to clear sight lines and maintain visibility at junctions. Dead weeds and litter are removed.

There is also a limited replacement budget. Some gapping up will be completed during the coming financial year.
