Roads - snow clearance

Gritting

Snow clearance focuses on the emergency clearing of roads affected in the shortest possible amount of time using available resources. Snow ploughing commences when approx 50mm of snow has fallen and snow continues to fall.

Our aim is to clear all priority roads, as soon as conditions permit, and clearance work will continue as necessary. In certain extreme conditions it may be necessary to spread a mixture of salt and grit to achieve traction, particularly in the case of compacted snow.

We obtain site-specific forecasts for Enfield from the Met Office and readings from our borough weather station. With this information we decide whether to grit fully, partially or not at all.

The A406 and A10 are gritted by WSP Civils on behalf of Transport for London. The M25 is managed by The Highways Agency.

If your road is not on the Council gritting programme, it is unlikely to be gritted for overnight frosty conditions. However, it may be added during excessive snowy conditions subject to available resources and at the Council’s discretion.
