Potholes

Potholes (on the carriageway)

Maintenance and repair of potholes where the surface of the road has been eroded posing a risk to road users.

Areas of carriageway are regularly inspected under the processes laid out in the National Code of Practice for Highway Maintenance Management “Well Maintained Highways”. This document, endorsed and recommended by the Department for Transport (DfT), is the “industry standard”. Principal roads are inspected every month and non - principal roads every 6 months.

All individual service requests, complaints and inspection results are recorded and assessed by Highways Services. Where the assessment indicates a matter of emergency or danger, then prompt remedial action is taken. All remaining work is then assessed on a priority basis, and carried out in order of urgency.

When a customer informs Highway Services of a pothole in the road a Highway Inspector endeavours to inspect within 10 working days unless we believe it constitutes a danger when it would be inspected within 24 hours.

If the Council’s intervention levels are met, works orders are raised and given priority 1 of 24 hours or priority 2 of 28 days according to the severity of the pothole. Where the pothole does not meet the current intervention levels, no repair orders are issued. However, if deterioration is noted at a subsequent inspection, repairs would be put in hand at that time. Although desirable, it is not financially viable to repair all potholes.

The A406 and A10 are maintained by WSP Civils on behalf of Transport for London. The M25 is managed by The Highways Agency.
