Roads - safety - cycling and walking to school

School Travel Planning

Promotion of safer, more environmentally sustainable and healthier ways of getting to and from school with particular emphasis on walking and cycling, through the development of school travel plans.

The Government has ruled that by 2010 all schools in England must have a School Travel Plan in place. Together we can make a difference to the journey children make to get to and from school by making it safer, healthier, sustainable and more interesting.

School Travel Plans
The Government’s School Travel Plan initiative aims to cut congestion and pollution caused by the school run by promoting sustainable travel within school communities and to raise awareness among pupils and parents of the harmful effects of increasing car use on children's health, safety and independence. The School Travel Plan process aims to win "hearts and minds" by raising awareness of the implications of travel choice and the benefits of encouraging more sustainable travel to school.

School Travel Plans look at ways to encourage walking and cycling to school, along with the use of public transport and car share schemes. School Travel Plans are school specific and written in conjunction with the whole school community through a working party of teachers, parents, governors, support staff and pupils.

School Travel Plans also aim to improve the safety of the main walking and cycling routes to school. Road safety issues are identified through survey work carried out with the school community. Once the road safety issues have been identified and the school has determined the school travel patterns, an action plan of schemes to implement change can be put together.
