The Enfield School Crossing Patrol Service
We are seeking reliable and mature adults, who are reasonably fit and healthy and who are interested working part-time as a School Crossing Patrol (SCP). They would become part of a team responsible for the safety of young people travelling to and from school. Anyone up to the age of 75 years may apply and over half of the team are already over the age of 60.
Responsibility for School Crossing Patrols was handed over by the Metropolitan Police to London Local Authorities from 1st April 2000. Although local authorities have had responsibility for SCPs in the rest of the country for much longer, the Metropolitan Police were the last police authority to relinquish responsibility.
There are currently 56 sites across the Borough of Enfield covering many junior and some senior schools. We are currently seeking to fill a number of vacancies at various sites, particularly in the Southgate area.
The hours vary slightly from site to site and cover the beginning and the end of the school day. A typical site would be covered from around 8:15 am until 9:15 am and again from 3 pm until 4 pm.
School Crossing Patrol staff who transferred from the police were paid on a weekly basis with a retention allowance paid at school holiday time. New SCP staff recruited after 1st April 2000 are paid the same amount but on a monthly basis. Taking into account 12 weeks of school holidays, the rate of pay is approximately equivalent to £7.69 per hour worked.
From 30th January 2001, (Section 270, Transport Act 2000), School Crossing Patrols were empowered to assist any pedestrian who needs help across the road and not just schoolchildren. In order to stop traffic and help people cross the road, they must wear an approved coat and hat and carry the official sign. All uniform and safety equipment is supplied.
