Road safety - dangerous road junctions

Traffic Engineering

Provision of traffic engineering measures aimed at reducing casualties at dangerous road junctions.

There are about 1100 road accidents every year in the Borough of Enfield that result in injury to road users, and there can be between 8 - 25 fatalities. The Council receives funding from the Mayor for London to finance its road safety schemes programme, and over the last few years this has been about £500,000 per year. This sum pays for about 10 schemes of varying value. Unfortunately demand for safety schemes far outstrips the resources available and consequently the Council must prioritise how it spends this money. This is done primarily by considering the history of injury accidents for roads and junctions around the borough.

Each year a safety schemes programme is produced as part of the Council’s bid to the Mayor for London for funding in the following financial year. Requests for improvements at dangerous junctions are investigated as part of the bidding process, to see whether safety measures can be justified when compared to the many other roads in the Borough with accident problems. If improvements are being asked for at a dangerous road junction that is already on the safety schemes programme the customer is informed of this.

Any requests for safety improvements that cannot be met through the above process are retained on a database. Occasionally other sources of funding become available to the Council for road safety measures and former requests can be considered at such times.

Customers can request improvements at dangerous road junctions by post, phone and email or in person.
