Road markings and signage - street name plates

Street Name Plates

The local authority responsible for the naming of streets within their local area and for ensuring that street nameplates are provided and fitted in suitable positions.

It is important, as we travel further from our local area, that we can find where we are and where we want to go quickly and efficiently. Most importantly it is vital in the event of an urgent situation that you and your street can be located quickly by the Emergency Services

In the case of a new development, the developer is responsible for the erection of name plates to the Council's specification

The Council is responsible for repair and maintenance of street name plates (SNP) when this becomes necessary either due to accidental damage, vandalism or normal wear and tear.

If a SNP is missing or damaged, contact Highway Services informing us of the street name/ road junction or nearest house number. Priority is given to missing SNPs and damage is assessed according to its severity. In some cases, where the damage has not met the Council’s intervention levels, the SNP will be placed on a “waiting list” until funds become available. However, if deterioration is noted at a subsequent inspection, repairs will be put in hand at that time. Although desirable, it is not financially viable to repair all superficial damage

In addition to reactive calls, the Council’s Highways Inspectorate Team conducts routine walks of all the highways in the borough. Principal roads are inspected every month and non-principal roads every 6 months. During these inspections, damaged SNPs are identified and works orders raised according to the priorities above.

If you have witnessed someone causing damage to a SNP, please record date, time and vehicle registration number or other information and report it to us on the above contact details. Highway services endeavours to recover costs of repairs from third parties where possible.
