Almost all buildings built before 1700 are listed, and most of those between 1700 and 1840. After that there is much more selection, with very few after 1914.
As a property owner you should know whether or not your building is listed: if the listing was carried out during your ownership, the Council will have informed you by letter. If the listing was done before you obtained ownership it would have been revealed by the land charges search that you or your solicitor will have carried out prior to exchange of contracts. If you are a tenant and intend carrying out works that might require consent you should first check with the owners as to whether the property is listed. If in any doubt, enquire at the Civic Centre in person or telephone 020 8379 1000.

The effect of listing is that Listed Building Consent is required from the Council for any works (including works of alteration, extension, or demolition) that would, in the Council’s opinion, affect the special architectural or historic character of the interior or exterior of the building. This requirement may also extend to structures within the curtilage of the building, the more so when they are specifically mentioned in the listing description. This means that consent may be required to rebuild or modify walls, gates, pergolas and other features within the curtilage, as well as the main buildings.
