Schools - supervised medication

Supporting Pupils with Medical Needs

The Authority has a policy for Supporting Pupils with Medical Needs in schools. This sets out the legal position in respect of administering medication and provides forms that the school can use, in consultation with parents, if a medical care plan is needed.

All schools will have either adopted this policy or developed their own which would be available direct from the school.

The aim of the policy and guidelines is to

• Build on existing good practice, which ensures that children with medical needs attend school and benefit from that attendance.
• Set out ways in which schools can effectively and safely meet the needs of these pupils.
• Establish a framework which supports staff who are able to assist these pupils.
• Complement school Health and Safety policies.

If parents have a query about how their child’s medical needs while in school they should contact the Headteacher in the first instance.
