Local History Unit Holdings Part 3

Cuttings
Cuttings are selected from the local and national press. Each cutting is classified and indexed. The main collection dates from 1938 but we have a number of older cuttings books, particularly of Southgate. There are approximately 14,000 cuttings

We hold photocopies of sections from many nineteenth century directories covering the area and several national directories of the early nineteenth century. We have acquired by photocopy many nineteenth century voters lists and poll books

Photographs

The department holds some 15,000 photographs, the earliest from the 1860's and a large proportion taken at the turn of the century

Transparencies

The department holds 1,500 transparencies which are used for lectures and which are loaned to schools

Negatives

We hold some 3,600 negatives for pictures of which we have had copies made. There are also 100 glass plate negatives

Maps

The department holds a full collection of maps of the area of the London Borough of Enfield. Early maps in other repositiories have been photographed (eg Edmonton 1570 from the Marquess of Salisbury's collection, Enfield Tithe Map 1754 from the library at Trinity College, Cambridge). We have the first four editions of O.S.maps on 6 inch and 25 inch scale, also O.S.5 feet: 1 mile 1896, all pre-current O.S.maps on the grid system and a collection of printed maps of Middlesex. There are approximately 200 maps
