Safety - health and safety - regulation and inspection

A local authority carries out regular checks on local businesses and business premises to ensure that safe and healthy working conditions are provided for all employees and visitors.

Under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, authorised officers from this Service will enforce health and safety in commercial premises. Officers have a power of entry to all premises under Section 20 Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 where we are the enforcing authority.

Generally the Health and Safety Team are responsible for the following sectors: -
Offices & Warehouses
Retail - including shops, hairdressers, and builder’s merchants.
Leisure – including gyms and swimming pool

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) enforce premises that are not enforced by Enfield Council. The HSE are responsible for the following sectors: -
Construction sites, factories, schools and universities; premises owner/ run by local authorities, doctors surgeries and hospitals; residential accommodation; central government buildings; railways and the underground.
Health & Safety Inspection

The purpose of an inspection is to: -
Identify all activities which have been risk assessed.
Assess the effectiveness of any safe systems of work
Identify any potential risks arising from the activities carried on which could cause injury or disease.
Assess the effectiveness of management control to seek a safe working environment.
Identify contravention of the Law
Offer advice and guidance
Identify any goods, equipment or documents that fail any test, examination or check.

Once an inspection has been carried out the authorised Officer will then inform you of any contravention that the company has made and will offer advice / guidance or recommendations into complying with the relevant legislation. Correspondence will be sent to the premises once an inspection has been completed.
