Residents and businesses may be given advice on what to do if they believe asbestos may be present in a building. Council inspectors may visit the premises to confirm the presence of asbestos and advise on procedures for removal and disposal if such a course of action is recommended.
The Asbestos Team provides a range of services to residents of Enfield, regardless of whether they live in privately owned or local authority controlled housing, to other Council Departments and to businesses within the Borough.
Any resident seeking advice about the possible presence of an asbestos containing material within their home may contact the Service. If the resident owns their own property we will provide general information about asbestos to that person and, if necessary, arrange for a visit to be made by one of our qualified in-house surveyors who may take a sample of the suspect material and bring it back to our UKAS accredited in-house laboratory where it will be analysed to determine if asbestos is present. The resident will then be notified of the result and explained what options are available in terms of the safe management or disposal of asbestos. If the resident lives in a local authority owned home we might, in the first instance, refer that person to the Community Housing & Adult Social Services Group (CH&ASS) as it is possible that they will already hold information about possible asbestos in the resident’s property. This will be based on a survey of properties owned by the London Borough of Enfield which we have undertaken on behalf of CH&ASS. Alternatively, and based on our assessment of any identified risks, we will provide the same service as if the property were privately owned by the resident.
The Service works extensively with other Council Departments to ensure that asbestos is safely managed within operational buildings owned by the local authority e.g. in Schools, Libraries, Leisure Centres and Civic Buildings.
We also provide information and advice to commercial enterprises within the Borough, in particular about their “Duty to Manage” asbestos as set out in Government legislation.
Eligibility
There are no general restrictions as to who may access our service although we may refer residents of local authority owned homes to the Community Housing & Adult Social Services Group. This is because we may already have provided information to CH&ASS which will answer the customer’s enquiry.
Required Customer Information
