Pollution control - air quality

Each council has responsibility for measuring the quality of ambient air to ensure that it meets required standards in relation to the concentration of a defined range of pollutants such as lead, nitrogen dioxide, benzene etc.

The service has two sides; the first is the monitoring and review & assessment of air quality within the borough. The Council has 5 air pollution monitoring stations, which monitor for nitrogen dioxide, small particulates (PM10), carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and ozone. The data collected is quality assured and quality controlled by Environmental Research Group and the data is available on the London Air Quality Network Website. The data is used to write government required air quality reports and any changes in air quality within the borough. Review and assessment of air quality is a continuous programme, with update reports regarding air quality in the borough and progress with the implementation of the Council’s Air Quality Action Plan required to be submitted to DEFRA and the GLA annually. The air quality data collected by the Council is also regularly used in planning applications and consultations.

The Council also regulate emissions to air from a variety of prescribed industrial processes through the issuing of permits, which contain conditions of operation in relation to emissions to air. The processes are inspected on a regular basis to ensure that the operators are meeting the conditions of their permit. Any breaches of conditions, or complaints from the public regarding any of our permitted processes are investigated as quickly as possible and the appropriate action is taken.
