Trading Standards & LicensingThe Food Safety Act 1990 and regulations made under it make it an offence for anyone to sell or process food for sale, which is harmful to health. They also place an obligation on businesses to ensure that their activities are carried out in a hygienic way. The Food Safety Section deals with a wide variety of disciplines such as food hygiene, food standards, food complaints, food labelling, health and safety in food premises, infectious diseases control, food and water sampling, animal feedstuffs and licensing. The service also provides low cost specialist Food Hygiene Training. There are approximately 2230 food premises in the Borough all of which are part of a continuous risk rated inspection programme. A team of dedicated officers regularly inspect food businesses to ensure that they are complying with the law and to offer advice and assistance.
