Retail

Trading Standards Service

The service aims to ensure that any retailer operating within the borough operates within a fair and safe trading environment.

The Service carries out a risk assessed inspection programme of retailers within the Borough. During these visits to retailer’s premises, officers will bring any non-compliance with legislation to the proprietor’s attention. They will also indicate what remedial action is required.

Continued non-compliance could lead to formal action. Advice is also provided to retailers on request. An officer from the Service will also discuss with the retailer any complaint made by a customer where it is considered Trading Standards involvement may be appropriate. Again where non-compliance is detected, remedial action will be indicated, and formal action may ensue if non-compliance continues.

The Service will also advise retailers of products that are subject to recall by the producer or have been found to be unsafe. The Service will endeavour to notify retailers of changes to legislation that may affect their business.
