Trading Standards ServiceThe Trading Standards Service supports and advises businesses on how to ensure that they only supply goods that are safe. The service also protects the consumer by monitoring the supply of goods, and investigating the supply of unsafe goods and removing them from the market. Enfield Council’s Trading Standards Service provides assistance to both businesses and consumers in the area of product safety. The Service assists businesses by advising on what legislation and standards exist that are relevant to the products that they supply, and what steps they should take to ensure compliance with these. For producers (mainly manufacturers and importers) the Service will offer to set up a ‘Home Authority’ relationship. This means that regular liaison meetings can be arranged to offer more in depth advice or deal with particular concerns that the business may have. The relationship enables officers within the Trading Standards Service to have a greater knowledge of the business and they can advise when new legislation is to be enacted that may affect the products being produced. The Service will also act as a central contact point for enquiries about the business or its products from other Trading Standards Authorities. This means that the business would normally deal with only one Authority, even though its goods are being sold all over the country. The Service assists consumers by investigating instances where they believe that they have been supplied with an unsafe product. The Service also carries out monitoring programmes, which involve taking samples from a particular product type and having them assessed by independent experts. Where an unsafe product is discovered, then the Service will take steps to remove it from the market and alert consumers as to the dangers associated with it. Eligibility:
