Elections - electoral nominations

The Returning Officer provides information on the process of electoral nominations (how to stand in an election), and publishes a list of nominations during an election period.

Election rules determine who may stand as a candidate at elections. The rules vary dependent upon the type of election being contested, but in all cases, candidates must be at least 18 years of age on the day they submit their nomination paper.

The Returning Officer at Enfield deals with nominations for:

Parliamentary elections in the Edmonton, Enfield North and Enfield Southgate constituencies;
Elections to the London Borough of Enfield in each of the 21 electoral wards; and
Elections of the Assembly Member for the Enfield and Haringey constituency of the Greater London Assembly.

Nominations for elections to the European Parliament and for the London Mayor and London Assembly Members of the Greater London Assembly are dealt with by the respective Returning Officers for those elections.

The election timetable, which again varies dependent upon election type, sets out when nominations may be submitted. The Returning Officer will publish the appropriate timetable in advance of an election, and at the close of the nominations period, will publish the list of valid nominations received.

Eligibility
Eligibility for candidature depends upon the election type - advice must be sought from the Electoral Services team, , but general criteria are that a candidate must:

• be 18 years of age or over on the day they submit their nomination paper;
• for parliamentary elections, be a British, Commonwealth or Irish citizen;
• for other elections, be a British, Commonwealth, Irish or European Union citizen
• not be disqualified from standing for election.

Candidates do not have to represent a political party, although in most cases, they do.

Candidates must have their nomination supported by electors registered in the area being contested, consent to their nomination and, at all elections except those to the London Borough of Enfield, submit a deposit, which ranges from £500 to £10,000 dependent upon the election type.
