A programme enabling the members of the public whose name appears on the register of electors to exercise their right to vote in the election. Providing facilities for voting and counting and declaring results following an election.
All residents eligible to register to vote will have been given an opportunity to have their details included in the register of electors. The register is compiled in accordance with a statutory timetable.
Prior to an election, registered voters will be sent an official poll card advising how to cast their vote. Dependent upon timescales, they may vote in person at their designated polling station, by post or by appointing a person to vote on their behalf as proxy.
Polling stations are set up throughout the borough. Voting will take place between the hours of 7:00am and 10:00pm on the designated election day, and the votes will then be transferred to the count centre and the votes counted as soon as practicably possible after the poll has closed.
Once the results have been announced, they are published.
