Councillors - declaration of interest

Local councillors have to abide by a code of conduct part of which requires them to declare any interests, gifts or hospitality which they have or receive which could influence any decisions they may make as councillors. The local authority is required to publish these declarations.

Every 4 years (after each Borough Election) all newly elected councillors are required to complete a return (Notification by Members of a Local Authority or Financial and other Interests) registering any interests they may have. This form is reviewed and, where required, updated annually. A copy of these forms is open to public inspection at the Ground Floor Reception in the Civic Centre.

In addition members are required to declare any personal or prejudicial interests they may have at any Council meetings they are attending as members of the committee. These interests are recorded in the minutes of these meetings and also in a Declaration of Member Interests Register held within the Democratic Services Team. Copies of Committee Minutes can be obtained here.

The Declaration of Member Interest Register is also open to public inspection in hard copy at the Civic Centre. Anyone asking to inspect the register should be referred onto the Democratic Services Team so the necessary arrangements can be made.
