Free or concessionary home to school transport for pupils aged 5 to16. Free transport is usually provided where a pupil is attending the nearest school to their home and this is outside the statutory walking distance from home.
The Council may meet the cost of travel, between home and school if a child has to travel beyond three miles, as measured by the nearest available safe walking route, to reach the school where he/she is a registered pupil, and if the Council is unable to make arrangements for him/her to become a pupil at a suitable school nearer his/her home.
This is likely to apply to only a small number of children.
If you think your child may be eligible for this support, please contact us, using the details above.
Assistance with transport to a denominational or religious school will be offered free of charge where the above distance conditions are satisfied, and the pupil is attending the closest educational establishment of its type, the denominational or religious affiliation of the school is that to which the parent(s) or carer(s) adhere, and the parent(s) or carer(s) provide a letter of support and endorsement from their minister of religion.
Assistance may also be available where the above distance criteria are satisfied and the parent(s) or carer(s) of the pupil receive one of the following benefits: Income Support or Jobseeker's Allowance (Income-based) or Working Tax Credit or Disabled Persons Tax Credit or assistance as an asylum seeker. Applicants may also qualify if they receive Child Tax Credit and have an annual taxable income of less than £14,155.
Assistance with home to school travel may also be offered in the following circumstances:
Where supportive evidence is provided from an appropriate source (for example, a Social Worker or Education Welfare Officer) to indicate that there will be significant difficulties, due to the personal circumstances of the parent(s)or carer(s), in getting the child to their educational provision;
Where supportive medical evidence shows that the child would be unable to attend educational provision without transport arrangements being made by the authority;
Exceptionally, where the authority considers that the circumstances of the case justify the provision of free assistance with travel.
