Cheviots Children’s Disability Service

Respite care is a key support to parent/carers of children and young people with disabilities. Families require a range of respite options including after school clubs, weekend activities and holiday playschemes. Some families may require support in the home to help with the personal care needs of a child or young person or support in managing their behaviour, some families may require a home sitting service and some families may require an overnight respite break. An overnight break may be provided with another family or in an appropriate residential setting. All of these services provide parent/carers with a break, an opportunity to spend time with their other children or to simply rest. They provide children and young people with an activity they can enjoy, a chance to achieve and make friends.

Cheviots Children’s Disability Service is part of the Children’s Access and Support Team within the Directorate of Education, Children’s Services and Leisure Department. Services provided include social work support, home sitting, short overnight breaks, both family based and residential, playschemes, after school clubs and weekend activities, an independent counselling service. Requests for services come from families, Education, the Primary Care Trust and other voluntary organisations and agencies. Following a request for a service an assessment is completed by a Social Worker. This clarifies both the level of need and which services can best meet those needs. It may be that other agencies can provide more appropriate services to the child and family. If this is the case then it is discussed and planned with the family. It may not be possible to immediately meet all of a child or family’s needs, therefore some needs will be identified as ‘unmet’ and reviewed accordingly. The Local Authority is required to keep a register of children with disabilities and special needs in order to help plan and provide services. The register is being used to establish a Children’s Disability Network throughout Enfield. Through the Network, children and families receive regular information and news bulletins relating to all aspects of disability and special needs and about service provision both in Enfield and elsewhere. The Network is being developed to provide a point of contact and support for parent/carers via coffee mornings, group meetings and user forums. The Network is managed and administered from Cheviots Children’s Disability Service.

There may be some circumstances when Cheviots will commission services from other providers. For example if following an assessment it is considered that an external provider will more appropriately meet the needs of the child or young person and their family.
