Building Schools for the Future – FAQs

What is BSF?
BSF is a Government initiative bringing major investment to secondary schools across England. It aims to raise standards by ensuring that every secondary school has 21st century facilities within the next 15 years. It is the biggest investment in schools for more than a century making it a key part of Government plans for education reform. The investment will go into transforming learning supported by better buildings and improved ICT facilities. This will create an environment where young people can fulfil their potential and enable staff to use their skills to the best effect. The community will also benefit from better schools.

How much money is likely to be invested in Enfield's BSF programme?
In the region of £100 million for secondary schools, and special schools with secondary age students.

Why is BSF needed and what will it mean for my child?
BSF aims to transform learning and raise educational attainment for Enfield's young people. These young people will also benefit from well designed school buildings and facilities with state of the art ICT.

What are the timescales?
We are currently awaiting confirmation as to how much funding will be received to spend on the initial 5 projects in Enfield. Once confirmation is received, work could begin on the initial 5 projects as early as 2011.

Will any schools will be closed?
No decisions about individual schools have been made yet. Enfield are in the middle of a planning process which began in June 2008. As with any major building development programmes, consultation is an important part of the process to ensure that proposals represent everyone in the community as far as is possible. All key stakeholders, such as teachers, governors, children, young people, parents and Enfield residents, will be involved in Enfield's BSF consultations.

How will better facilities improve the standard of education?
Research suggests that pupils benefit from improved facilities and a state of the art learning environment. These improved school buildings will inspire both teachers and students to become more motivated and engaged with the curriculum.

Will there be much disruption to the local community?
As with any major building development projects there will inevitably be some disruption to the local community but every effort will be taken to ensure this is kept to a minimum.
