Home improvement home repairs assistance

The Small Works Assistance scheme provides financial assistance towards the cost of carrying out essential repairs, normally repairing leaking roofs, replacing defective boilers or electric wiring, up to the value of £3,000 in owner occupied properties.

A householder will contact the Team for information regarding eligibility for grant assistance, normally by telephone and it will be established if they meet the criteria, if they are not on a means tested benefit a preliminary form will be sent to them. The level of contribution will be calculated on return of the form and the client contacted to arrange for a survey of the property. If the work to the property is eligible for grant application forms will be sent out for completion and return with estimates etc. The grant is calculated and approval sent out to the householder who may then arrange for their builder to carry out the work. Officers visit the work in progress, on satisfactory completion of the work and on receipt of all necessary guarantees etc the final payment is made and the case closed.

Eligibility
These are discretionary grants towards the cost of essential works of repair or renovation. In order to qualify the household must contain a vulnerable person. These grants are means tested and are intended for those who cannot afford loan repayments.
They provide a mechanism by which vulnerable persons can get assistance with urgent repair work.
Examples of such urgent work are;
Badly leaking roofs.
Dangerous electrical installations.
Breakdown of existing plumbing and heating services.

And when the dwelling is sold or otherwise disposed of the Council will require the grant to be repaid in full (although the Council will satisfy itself that this is affordable)

Required Customer Information
Customers will have to be able to show proof of benefits, income and savings. They will also have to provide proof of ownership of the property and a minimum of two estimates for the work.

Service Level Agreement and Turnaround
None.
