Road markings and signage - tourist signs | |
Tourist signs ("brown signs") are the responsibility of the Highways Agency (M25); Transport for London (A10 and A406) and Enfield Council (all other roads). Major tourist attractions and facilities can apply for direction signs to their location and will be assessed against the criteria adopted the relevant highway authority. If the relevant criteria are met, the applicant will need to meet all of the costs of making up and erecting the signs. Applicants wishing to have a tourist sign erected should write to or email the relevant highway authority: Enfield Council: All roads in Enfield apart from the M25, A10 and A406:

Transport for London: The A10 (Great Cambridge Road) and the A406 (North Circular Road)

If agreed, signing will generally only be allowed up to five minutes driving time away from the signed destination. At any single junction approach or other location, only one tourist sign will generally be allowed and any one sign must not contain more than six tourist destinations. A fuller range of destinations may be signed for pedestrians and cyclists. If agreed, a permanent sign has an expected life of approximately 20 years. When a sign requires replacement, if the Authority is willing to have the sign renewed (which is not guaranteed), it will invite the applicant to submit a fresh application for the installation of a new sign. If applicants wish the sign to be renewed, they will be expected to meet the cost of the fresh application at whatever rate is applicable at that time. Eligibility:
The Government Office for London has advised that within the M25, excursion, historic, cultural, sports and leisure destinations of more than local significance should be preferred by road traffic authorities for tourist directional signing and that tourist signing to hotels, accommodation and restaurants is inappropriate. The Government Office for London has indicated that tourist signing on primary routes (A10 & A406) will only be considered for destinations attracting at least 100,000 visitors per year. However, Transport for London should be consulted on their tourist signing policy on the above primary routes. Required customer information:
