Housing - private tenants - advice and support | |
|
The Housing Advice Team can provide help and assistance to private tenants who are being harassed into leaving their accommodation by their landlord or Agent and those who have been illegally evicted. A Housing Adviser will interview the client, take down details of the complaint and arrange for an investigation to be carried out. The Housing Adviser will need to see relevant documents relating to the tenancy, including the tenancy agreement, rent book, notices to leave, letters and correspondence if they are available. If there is evidence that the private tenants has been illegally evicted then a Housing Adviser will contact the landlord / agent to discuss the tenant's claims and negotiate for the tenant to be reinstated in the property if appropriate to do so. If negotiations fail, it may be necessary to refer the client to a private solicitor who can apply to the County Court for an injunction forcing the landlord/agent to reinstate the tenant. The Court also has the power to order a landlord / agent to stop harassing or assaulting a tenant. A solicitor can also pursue a claim for damages on behalf of a tenant. Eligibility
